EXHIBITION AT TORRE DE CANYAMEL
The sculptor turns the dichotomy between water and fire, life and destruction, into the central elements of the exhibition.
A selection of around fifteen works—sculptural pieces, paintings, and two installations—will be on display until October 31.
The historic Torre de Canyamel has opened its doors to the latest exhibition by Joan Costa: Never Know. Curated by ABA ART, the exhibition invites us to reflect on the uncertain and unknown future of Gaia, Mother Earth, continuously wounded by human actions. This reflection is presented in dialogue with the emblematic space of the 13th-century defense tower—a once-impenetrable refuge that protected the local population for centuries.
Outside the Torre de Canyamel stands one of the artist’s latest creations: a baobab tree sculpted from white Carrara marble, more than 3 meters high. Just beyond the entrance, Costa leads us into a Blue Forest—a dreamlike space composed of 400 olive branches hanging from the ceiling, all dyed a deep, intense blue. This same color appears again in other marble sculptures and canvas paintings throughout the exhibit.
On the first floor, visitors encounter another striking installation: a white resin water droplet, which, as it falls, creates concentric circles on a bed of salt dyed blue. Once again, water is presented as the essential source of life, which the artist contrasts with the blackness of burnt tree trunks featured in various paintings, and a charred cypress baobab sculpture.
Costa presents a powerful contrast between life and destruction, shaped by his deep sensitivity to nature—the very force that gives us life and now finds itself under threat from human impact. The exhibition becomes an urgent call for reconciliation between humanity and nature, and a testament to the artist’s commitment to the natural forces that sustain life, maintain balance, and oxygenate the planet.
The exhibition can be visited at the Torre de Canyamel – Artà to Canyamel Road, km 5 – from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm and 6 pm to 9 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm. For more information, contact: info@torredecanyamel.com or call 971 84 11 34.
